Coaches Code of Conduct
As an SWHC coach, I understand that I am a role model for youth athletes and a representative of the community. I agree to the following standards to ensure a positive, safe, and developmental environment:
1. Philosophy & Player Development
- Prioritize the Athlete: Winning is a consideration, but never at the expense of a player’s well-being or enjoyment. I will care more about the child than the scoreboard.
- Focus on Fundamentals: I will teach the basics and provide all players with the opportunity to improve their skills, gain confidence, and build self-esteem.
- Quality Instruction: I will organize practices that are fun, challenging, and age-appropriate. I will stay familiar with the rules, techniques, and strategies of hockey.
2. Leadership & Communication
- Emotional Maturity: I will be a positive role model, displaying emotional maturity and self-control. I will never yell at, verbally abuse, or physically abuse a player or official.
- Constructive Feedback: I will be generous with praise and consistent in my discipline. I will not criticize players publicly; I will strive to be an effective and honest communicator.
- Parental Partnership: I will maintain an open line of communication with parents, clearly explaining the goals and objectives of the team and the association.
3. Safety & Integrity
- Physical Safety: I will be alert to the physical safety of all players and ensure a safe environment on the ice and in the locker room.
- Holistic Growth: I will be concerned with the overall development of my players, stressing good health habits, clean living, and the importance of being a team player.
- Personal Support: I will be a good listener and adjust to the personal needs or problems of my players when necessary.
4. Respect for the Game
- Sportsmanship: I will lead by example in my interactions with officials, opponents, and parents.
- Passion for Hockey: I will remember that while playing the game is great, fostering a lifelong love for the game in my players is my ultimate goal.
